The tale of the 'last honest whore' may seem cliché, in a strange way, but this show did a nice job of intermingling Julia Robert's famed portrayal with a bit of a higher-end feel, but as soon as they threw in the drama of a boyfriend it all went to hell. The Hannah-Belle dynamic was the core of the show, the two never mixed company, but had enough conflict to drive such a story, but as many promising dramas tend to do, they took too much stock in a soap-opera relationship that was written purely to demolish the heroine's honesty. The lead, played by Doctor Who actress Billie Piper, did a fine job of playing trickster-by-night 'Belle' and peachy keen girl next door 'Hannah' with ease and charm…Then they turned the page and season two got the shaft. In the first season we got a deliciously dirty peek into the world of sex parties and orgies (not as synonymous as you might think) and one-on-one tricks. It may sound harsh as this has been a pretty entertaining show throughout the quick eight-episode season, but it has to be said that the conclusion to this season's tale of sex and woe ended in predictable plots and a 180-degree shift from sexy stories to dirty novels: The background to this show is that it is based on the memoirs of a woman known only as "Belle Du Jour." 'Belle' is the basis of this show and her profession, prostitution, is at the core of the series. For some reason they decided to play with the camera angles in this, the season finale, and had blank stares from the ground up and dizzying montages of sex toys and beaded curtains that did little to take away from the backyard-porn feel of the episode. There was no clever coup for power or play on words, but instead the standard "man in suit falls into woman in pleather" plot found in many a back-room video store. The first three seasons did not air on M-Net Series.Part of what Belle was doing to the laptop was sexy her exhales and breathy voice coupled with scenes of she and her past clients was enough to get the blood pumping, but the illusion ended as soon as they started talking.
